Video on the Net

March 28th, 2007

Video on the Net was a fantastic conference held in San Jose, CA (March 19 -22) and add-on to Jeff Pulver’s community of “V’s” — Voice, Vision and Video. Jim Long’s Verge New Media captures the pioneering spirit of those participating in this space. Jim is a prime example of “old media” rediscovering its passion through “new media” expression, and his intuitive storytelling techniques and stellar camera work are a powerful combination.

Additionally, Video on the Net serves to advocate for the community, and is the name of a new public policy initiative being led by Jeff Pulver to advocate for the rights of web-produced video. To quote, the media revolution will not just be televised…

Back from my extended “webbatical”

March 19th, 2007

For many reasons, none of them in need of over-explanation, I’ve been on a self-defined “webbatical.” When I googled the term, it came up with no results — so, I’ll offer up my own definition. Webbatical is a deliberate and perpetual state of non-participation online, especially in social networks where you once were active. No blogging or vlogging either. I’ve been on a webbatical since May of 2006 and have limited myself to observer status and information sponge, but haven’t offered up any of my own musings for public consumption, with the exception of a few semi-anonymous comments.

My webbatical is ending as of today as I’m ready to join in on the conversation(s) already in progress… and have plenty of video to publish.

Assemblywoman Sally Lieber goes homeless…

April 14th, 2006

A video piece I shot after running into Sally Lieber at the Don Edwards lecture series. This video was shot on the spot in downtown San Jose, edited in an hour and posted to You Tube — all while Sally Lieber remained homeless, as part of a legislative experiment. No one — not even her husband or staff — knew where Sally was as she attempted to find out first-hand what it’s like to be homeless in Silicon Valley.
